Fastest Man Alive

The roots of this blog were in athletic and political comments before I so rudely turned it away. I am going to be somewhat liberal in my definition of sport (and, indeed, in my politics), so that I can say I am continuing today's trend of sports posts to return us to our roots. Anyway here is the actual post, for those of you dying with anticipation:

Did you guys see the men's 100m run? if you did not Bolt (amazingly fitting last name) from Jamaica won gold, by a ton. His celebration was traditional in most respects. He ran with his arms out to the side, slapped one hand against his chest and smiled like only the best in the world can. The only non-traditional part of his celebration was that he started it with 15-20 meters left in the race, which was ok because he had already won. Also, he broke his own world record by 3 one-hundredths of a second. 100 meters in 9.69 seconds. One of the announcers (the track knowledgeable one) speculated that if Bolt had actually been trying for the entire race, that he could have run a 9.59. That would have been a full tenth faster than he did run, which, for those of you who are not track-savvy, is huge in the 100. Michael Phelps is the greatest Olympic athlete of all time at 23, but Usain Bolt is the fastest man alive (that title comes with the 100m run) at 21. If Bolt ever decides that he wants to set a decent world record, he can make one that no one will touch for years.

The race was pretty feel good all around, since the second place man, Richard Thompson of Trinidad, was rolling around on the track in glee at winning silver, and Walter Dix of the U.S.A. was more than pleased to beat the odds for bronze.

Group discussion question: Which title is better in life (excluding publicity during the Olympics): Greatest Olympic Athlete of All Time, or Fastest Man Alive? I am personally partial to Fastest Man Alive because you can really impress people you meet in general, and because you can easily prove your dominance to non-believers.

That post was not so bad right? Next time I plan to submit a picture of an amoeba eating an economist.

my pick is "greatest olympian ever" because the title allows you to coast through the rest of your life posing with your medals and letting lesser mortals pose with same (becoming wealthy in the process- five-figure appearance fees!). if you fall on hard times you also have many more medals to sell. as "fastest man alive" people will walk up to you several times a day and demand you prove it. very tiring.

I'm offended that you forgot about the decathlon the winner of which bears the title "Greatest Athlete in the World" - long live true diversity of talent!
